Report:

As a spectacular venue Glan Y Gors is in a league of it's own, located on a Welsh hillside, only by walking the circuit do the steep climbs and falls of the track become apparent. Challenging for the driver but engine performance is equally important.

Saturday practice had some mechanical issues finally traced to a small crack in the exhaust, this was replaced and overall the day went well. Sunday morning final 5 minute practice and Conset Kart was 4 fastest but with several drivers choosing to make a short run in order to keep fresh tyres for timed qualifying.

Timed Qualifying

A few drivers dropped out of this last round and only 27 instead of the normal quota of over 34 lined up for the 12 minute Qualifying session, times were close as usual and Conset Kart was 12th. This was run as one grid of 27 instead of split into two so several drivers including Conset Kart lost their best lap due to slow traffic.

Race 1

A steady run moved Conset Kart up to 8th place.

A Final 1

Starting 8th on the grid and feeling that some drivers ahead had found a set up advantage it was decided to increase the tyre pressures from 9psi to 11psi, Conset Kart was now struggling for outright speed especially on the long uphill straight. A defensive run resulted in 9th. So not great but a healthy clutch of championship points.

A Final 2

The conclusion was that tyre pressures had caused the loss of speed as that was all that had been changed, all else we had time to check was checked and there seemed to be nothing wrong.

Starting 9th on the grid and now with tyre pressures back to 9psi and a 20 lap race ahead. It was quickly apparent that the speed problem on the long sweeping straight had not been caused by running higher tyre pressures, it was impossible to defend position on this area of the track let alone overtake anyone running slower in front, a later investigation of the engine will hopefully find the real problem. The net result was another 9th.

2012 Championship Standings

2 x 9th's in the last round were just enough to finish 8th in the overall championship and 2nd in the 'Masters' .. the Masters category being for the over 30's which was won by 31 year old Richard Moxom running the 'Pipe 2000' liveried kart.

Only the best 13 races from 16 count

2013

Will Conset Kart be racing in 2013 ? .. driver Jim Rainbird says "I am 52 in April 2013, my heart say yes but my head says I need to think about that !"
